CVS 101

As I get more readers to my now not-so-new blog, I find myself answering similar questions about CVS and Walgreens and how to shop there. I've decided to write a post dedicated to each store as a 101 for beginners type post. In these "101" posts, you'll learn how to shop at CVS and Walgreens to best maximize your money and coupons. If you follow the tips, you can save 90%+ on your shopping trips!

CVS puts out a weekly ad in the Sunday newspaper. You can also have the ad emailed to you from their website if you choose. CVS ads are released several days (if not weeks) early on Slickdeals.

The first thing you'll need to do is get an ExtraCare card. They are FREE for you and you can sign up for one at your local CVS. Make sure to register the card online at http://www.cvs.com/ so you can get coupons emailed to you. Each time you enter your CVS store scan your ExtraCare card at the scanner machine (usually found near the front of the store or near the make-up department). It will usually print out additional coupons for you. You can also scan items to see the price on this scanner.

In my CVS posts you'll see me refer to ECB's. ECB's are ExtraCare Bucks and they are the rewards that print out on the bottom of your receipt to be used as cash at CVS. For example, you may find toothpaste on sale for $2.99 and the ad says you'll get $2.00 back in ECB's. You buy the toothpaste and pay the $2.99 and then on the bottom of your receipt it will say "$2.99 ExtraCare Bucks". You can use these ECB"s on your next purchase as CASH! Please note that the cash register will not allow the cashier to use the ECB's on tax so you should always ask for your subtotal before tax to know how many ECB's you can use. Also, you won't get money back on the ECB's so if your total is $1.50 and you have an ECB for $2.00 you will lose the $.50. You'll need to weigh your options and decide if it's worth it to buy a filler item (my CVS has caramel canides at the front for $.33) or to just pay our of pocket and use the ECB's later.

The goal with CVS is to "roll" your ECB's to make your out of pocket (OOP) the lowest possible. It is a game! You do this typically by separating into smaller transactions and using the ECB's earned from one transaction to pay for the next.

Here is an example:

Colgate Max Fresh or Max White, On Sale $2.99 Get $2.00 ECB's (limit 2)
Use $1.00 cpn
Pay $1.99 out of pocket after coupon
You'll earn $2 in ECB's from this deal

Then do your next transaction:

Adidas Action 3 Anti-perspirant, On Sale $3.99 Get $3.00 ECB's (limit 3)
Use $1.00 cpn
Use your $2 ECB's from first transaction
Pay just $.99 after coupon and ECB's

You will often get $3 off when you spend $15 CVS coupons printed from the in-store scanner. Your total needs to add up to $15 BEFORE coupons! Hand the cashier your $3 off when you spend $15 coupon first then the rest of your coupons, then the ECB's left to pay off your balance. This order is very important and the deals won't work if you do it another way.

You may also get CVS coupons for items that print from the scanner or at the bottom of your receipt. You can stack these coupons, this means you can use 1 CVS coupon and 1 manufacturer's coupon.

Make sure to hand the cashier your coupons in this order:
1. $ off when you spend X (make sure your total reaches the correct amount before coupons and tax)
2. CVS coupons & manufacturer's coupons
3. ECB's

Please leave a comment or send me an email if you have any questions about shopping at CVS with these guidelines!

Friendly's SprinkleVision

Those of you who grew up on or currently live in the Northeast are probably familiar with Friendlys. If you are in New England, Friendlys is probably a way of life! For those of you who don't live near a Friendlys or have never been to one, Friendlys is a casual restaurant that serves typical American food along with great ice cream - sundaes, shakes (they call them Fribbles), all kinds of creations!

The folks at Friendlys asked to try out their newest great idea for kids - SprinkleVision! Throughout this year, kids who go to Friendlys will be given a pair of special SprinkleVision glasses with red lenses to help them view the codes hidden throughout the restaurant. They write down the codes in the restaurant and then when they get home, log on to http://www.iwannagotofriendlys.com/ to access the virtual ice cream factory where kids can do puzzles and play games for a chance to earn real prizes!

The grand-prize winner will win a spot in an upcoming Friendlys commercial and FREE ice cream for a year, 3 winners will get a tour of the real ice cream factory and 27 winners will get FREE ice cream for a year!

This was such a fun experience at Friendlys watching all the kids writing down the codes and wearing their cute red glasses! Friendlys has always been kid-friendly but this just adds to the kid-friendliness. If you have a Friendlys near you, take your kids to experience SprinkleVision and a chance at some fabulous prizes!

Kern Scheduling Services

Kern Scheduling Services (KSS) is a mystery shopping company that acts as a clearinghouse for other mystery shopping companies and helps schedule their shops. For example, mystery shopping company A may be a small company that then outsources their scheduling to Kern Scheduling. You'll find many shops listed on this site from many different companies and may be a good beginning point for a new mystery shopper.

If you're new to mystery shopping, please read my Mystery Shopping 101 post here for guidelines and tips and check out the other mystery shopping companies I have discussed by clicking here.

Dove Go Fresh Nectarine & White Ginger

I hope you were able to watch last week's premiere 90 second broadcast of “GOSSIP GIRL: Real NYC Stories Revealed” during Gossip Girl on The CW that I posted about previously here. I did and loved catching the finale on The CW website. Tune in again each Monday for a new short preview of the story and then head over to your computer or mobile device to catch the finale.

This video series would not have been possible without Dove who is introducing their new Go Fresh Nectarine & White Ginger Scent. The generous people at Dove sent me the Go Fresh Nectarine & White Ginger Body Wash and Beauty Bar. I could smell the delicious scent before I even got the package open! The smell is not overpowering but is light and fresh smelling.

I often use Dove products in the shower and really enjoyed the creaminess of these products and the way my skin felt after using them. The scent lasted and one of my co-workers told me I smelled like fruit salad!

Look for this luscious new scent wherever you typically find Dove products sold and don't forget to tune in to the CW on Mondays during the last commercial of Gossip Girl for the rest of “GOSSIP GIRL: Real NYC Stories Revealed”.

Edible Gifts Plus Review and Giveaway!

Those of you who know me know that I love to cook and bake. My co-workers in particular are the frequent beneficiaries of my baking. I love to try out new recipes and creative ideas and I was so excited to try these fantastic (and adorable) brownie stix from Edible Gifts Plus. They arrived at my door with each stix being individually wrapped in cellophane, then placed standing up in an open box bottom with colored paper shreds, then wrapped in cellophane and topped with a nice sheer green bow! I left it intact just long enough to admire the wrapping before tearing them open to try the brownies!

I received the 4-pack of brownie stix, with an assortment of brownies dipped in white chocolate, dark chocolate and milk chocolate. All are rolled in colored confetti sprinkles making this the cutest gift! These brownies were absolutely delicious and didn't last long in my house!

The website is chock full of goodies from giant fortune cookies to rice krispie treats with actual photos on them to candy bouquets. If it's sweet it's on this site!

The woman behind Edible Gifts Plus is Margo Rappel, a single mother of three children, who started Edible Gifts Plus 18 months ago, and is now on her way to $500,000 in sales for the year! Margo credits the success of Edible Gifts Plus to her "above and beyond" customer service philosophy and offering customers many delicious ways to make an impact with a personalized gift without breaking the bank. They are always available at Edible Gifts Plus to help you customize and personalize your gift to fit the recipient perfectly and that's their goal.

The folks at Edible Gifts Plus have graciously decided to give one (1) of my lucky readers a $30 gift card to be spent on the yummy site! They have also designated a special coupon code for Nicole's Nickels readers. If you use the code "nickel10" at check-out you will receive 10% off your order. These goodies make great gifts for every occasion!

There are six (6) "extra" ways to enter (each one below gets you one additional entry):

Another FREE Hallmark card!

UPDATE: DEAL IS NOW DEAD. Remember the FREE personalized custom Hallmark cards I posted about here and here? Well, there is another new code to use to get yet another FREE card!

Just head over to the Hallmark site here and create a personalized card priced at $3.49 or less. At the checkout, enter code ICTCARD. They will even pay the postage and mail the card out for you!

There are a ton of options with these cards. You can write your own messages, and decide which fonts, what size fonts and what colors to use. They are completely personalized and customizable.

I did hear that some people who ordered just before Mother's Day had delivery delays and their cards did not arrive in time. If you order now your card should be good for Father's Day and you even have the option to designate a delivery date when you check out! Because of the delays in the Mother's Day deliveries, I suggest scheduling the card to arrive earlier than you would like - just in case! Also, you do not need to order a Father's Day card, you can choose any card priced at $3.49 or less.

FREE Haagen-Dazs

Haagen-Dazs is offering customers a FREE scoop of any Bee-built ice cream flavor tomorrow, Tuesday, May 12 between 4 pm and 8 pm. As with any food freebie, please call the location you plan to visit before you head out to make sure they are participating! Click here for locations.

Bee-built ice cream you ask? Yes, over 50% of Haagen-Dazs ice cream relies on honey bees to pollinate the necessary ingredients. Haagen Dazs has taken their annual Free Scoop Day and turned it into a campaign for awareness of the plight of the honey bees who in recent years have seen their population decrease by one-third due to various environmental and human causes. These honey bees pollinate one-third of the country's food supply and Haagen Dazs has chosen to increase knowledge about the issues facing the honey bee in their annual Free Scoop Day.

Date nights or girls night/boys night evenings are a luxury that many have been forced to forgo in today's economy. Here is an idea for a fun-filled "comedy club" evening on a movie budget. STAND-UP 360™ is series of feature-length comedy films coming to movie theaters nationwide starting this week. Tickets are approximately $15 each - way less than the entry charge into a comedy club, not to mention that pesky 2 drink minimum!

STAND-UP 360™ will be shown in 6 editions throughout the summer, taking you onstage and backstage, delivering the excitement and intimate feel of a night out in a Big Apple comedy club.

You can view a preview or find out where STAND-UP 360™ is playing near you by clicking here. You can even get reminders when the new editions air by registering here.
