Guest Post: Stockpiling

This guest post is written by my bloggy friend Karen. Karen is a stay at home mom to 2 girls and blogs in her spare time at Frugal Rhode Island Mama about about using coupons along with sales, store incentives and rebates to save on everyday products.

One way to save money on things you use every day is to stockpile. If you stockpile then you'll almost never had to pay full price. Do you know how much money you'll save each year? A lot!

In order to stockpile you'll need coupons and a really good sale! If you combine the two (along with any store incentives and/or rebates) you will get items at Rock Bottom prices and you can begin building your stockpile. A Rock Bottom price is when you get something for FREE or next to FREE when you compare it to the full price. You don't have to stock up on every item you use right away, you gradually build it up over time. It could take months and then once you start to run low on something you keep your eyes out for another sale to build it up again. Really good sale prices come and go in cycles and after a while, you'll start to notice the trend.

How to begin your stockpile….

1. Figure out how much money you want to spend each week building up your stockpile. You can start with $20 if you’d like. With sales and coupons, $20 can go very far.

2. Make a list of the things you seem to use most often or run out of the most. Those are things you DO want to stockpile first. Remember, we aren’t just talking about food. You can stockpile health and beauty items too.

3. Again, don’t run out and buy everything at once. When the weekly sales ads come, sit down and look to see if any of the items on your list are on sale that week.

4. Next you want to see if you have (or can get) coupons for those items. Coupons can come from many different sources…. The Sunday newspaper, Magazines, Boxes of products, the mail, printed from the Internet, from your family or friends and you can even purchase coupons on eBay or from a coupon clipping service.

5. To begin, I suggest you ONLY buy items you have coupons for that are on sale that week. Figure out how much you can get with the amount you set aside for your stockpile.

6. Repeat this each week until you have a good stockpile going. Then just replenish as needed.

As you build your stockpile you may find items that never have coupons that you really want to stockpile. That is OK, but ONLY buy them when they are on sale. Remember the purpose to a stockpile is to help you save money. If chicken breast is on sale for $1.29lb then buy as much as your budget allows and then freeze it. Since you won't really find coupons for meat you have to watch for those low prices so you'll know when to stock up.

Light My Fire Fragrance Oils & Warmer Review and Giveaway

I really do love my readers! Especially the ones with businesses that share with me! Danielle, aka "The Business Mommy" wears another hat as she owns her own candle and fragrance business. She recently emailed to tell me more about her new business, Light My Fire Candles, and offered to send me some samples to review and even to host a giveaway!

I was so excited to receive my samples in the mail. Danielle had asked me to look over her very long list of fragrances and choose the ones I would like. I love yummy, food smells like vanilla and cakes and saw some incredible-sounding scents on her list. I received an oil warmer and several oils to try out. I'm a candle person and had never tried the warmer and oils before. I may be hooked!
I loved the scents I received - sweet milk, toasted marshmallow, and birthday cake. Each one smelled more delicious than the next! All it takes is a few drops of the oil into some water on top of the warmer and your house will smell just as yummy! You can use the oils in other ways - like putting a few drops on the furnace filter, or put some on cotton balls to hide in corners, under the car seat, or even in the vacuum cleaner bag. You can even add some drops to a candle (after it is lit and already burning) to add or refresh the scent of it.

Light My Fire has a wide array of candles and fragrance-related products such as oils, sachets, incense and other gifts. Danielle's website is comprehensive and you should definitely check out her amazing offerings.

Danielle at Light My Fire Candles has graciously decided to give one (1) of my lucky readers the oil warmer pictured in this post and three (3) fragrance oils of their choice - a value of $20.00! To enter, you MUST go the Light My Fire Candles website and leave a comment telling me which three (3) fragrance oils you'd choose (from the over 160 scents available!) if you won. Make sure to leave your email address so I can contact the winners.

There are six (6) "extra" ways to enter (each one below gets you one additional entry):

1. subscribe to my blog (either via email using the box in the left sidebar or RSS feed). If you already subscribe leave a comment saying you do. If you subscribe by email you MUST confirm your email and activate the subscription.

2. follow me on Twitter (http://twitter.com/NicolesNickels) and tweet about this giveaway. If you already follow me that's fine, just comment with a link back to the tweet about this giveaway. You must tweet about the giveaway for this entry to count.

3. blog about this giveaway (leave the link in the comment)

4. email 5 people about this giveaway (please cc me on this email - nicolesnickels at gmail dot com and leave a comment saying you sent the email)

5. grab my button for your site (leave the link to where the button is in the comment)

6. add the link to this giveaway on a Mr. Linky about giveaways or on a blog giveaway site, blog carnival or forum or yahoo group (leave link to where you did this in the comment)

You MUST leave a comment answering the question above as your first entry and then additional entries are governed by the terms above. You MUST leave a separate comment for each entry you are able to make. Feed and email subscribers will need to click on to my actual blog to leave a comment. This giveaway is open to U.S. residents only, 18 years old or over, and the winners will be chosen by random.org. This giveaway will be good until August 9 at 9:00 pm Eastern time and a winner will be announced soon thereafter. If the winner does not respond to my email within 48 hours then I will pick a new winner. Good luck!

KIDO'Z - Kid-Safe Browser!

I was intrigued when I received an email introducing me to KIDO'Z. KIDO'Z is the first international operating system available in seventeen (17) different languages. Basically, you download KIDO'Z (for FREE) and your kids use it as their browser. It's completely kid-safe and family-friendly!

This means no embarrassing pop-ups and no worries when your children are online. You can even walk away from the computer without having to monitor what sites they are going to - those "bad" sites are not accessible from this special browser!

Above is a screenshot of what the browser will look like on your computer. As you can see the graphics are colorful and how much more inviting is this to kids than the plain screen of the browser you are using?

KIDO'Z has received rave reviews from The Washington Post and PC World among others. I installed the software and found it to be an easy installation. Worried about downloading from the Internet? Well, KIDO'Z has been tested by Softpedia and here are the results - "Softpedia guarantees that KIDO’Z Browser Beta is 100% Clean, which means it does not contain any form of malware, including but not limited to: spyware, viruses, trojans and backdoors. This software product was tested thoroughly and was found absolutely clean; therefore, it can be installed with no concern by any computer user."

KIDO'Z has several layers of security with a parental security area so you can control how much security there is on the browser. The parent also has the ability to add sites that the child is able to view online. Please note that while the software is specially designed with children 3-7 years old in mind, children of any age can take advantage of the great benefits of this great software.

Toluna/Your2Cents Surveys

Your2Cents is now Toluna Surveys! I have been a member of Your2Cents for over a year now and have cashed out several times with them. They do not send many surveys but I qualified frequently for the ones that I did receive.

Remember to use your separate "surveys" email when you sign up. I don't receive any spam on the email account I use for surveys - yay! I love knowing that when I open that email, it will be filled with survey opportunities for me.

Toluna

As always, it's completely FREE to sign up for Toluna/Your2Cents and you're under no obligation to complete any surveys. Often, surveys lead to great product tests and if you're able to earn just $3 per day doing surveys, that's over $90 per month which is my gas money!

Some of the other surveys companies already reviewed on this blog are Lightspeed, Greenfield, Global Test Market, Survey Savvy, SayNation, Valued Opinions, American Consumer Opinion, Opinion Outpost , Zoompanel, Have you signed up for all of them?

Dog To Go Bowl Review and Giveaway

My dogs, Chester and Cleo, are extremely spoiled! There's not much I won't do for them, that's for sure. I know many of you feel the same about your furry family members! I recently was sent a To Go Bowl by Furry Travelers for Chester and Cleo. It is a 6 piece set that fits right in your car's cup holder. It really is an ingenious invention and one that will always be in my car from now on!The 6 piece set includes, a bowl, splash guard, bowl lid, base, base lid, and adjustable ring. It is easy to put together and made of durable plastic. Mine came in yellow but there are other colors to choose from. As people become more mobile so are their pets and having something for your pet to drink from while in the car is very important! This bowl not only serves that purpose but also fits right in the cup holder of your car for easy access and more stability (fewer spills!).

The To Go Bowl holds up to one (1) liter of water and the removable base is the perfect place to store treats. This is a one-stop hydration and nutrition station! The To Go Bowl will also work in boats, RV's and even golf carts.

The folks at Furry Travelers have graciously decided to give one (1) of my lucky readers a To Go Bowl of their own! To enter, you MUST go the Furry Travelers website and leave a comment telling me what color To Go Bowl you'd prefer - it comes in 8 different colors you can see on the website.

Good luck!

Bushnell 5 Day Wireless Weather Forecaster - FREE After Rebate!

You can get the Bushnell Wireless 5 Day Weather Forecaster on rollback at WalMart right now for just $50.00. Use this $50.00 manufacturer's rebate to get the item for FREE!
I went tonight to my local WalMart and found these in the hardware section where they had outdoor thermometers. They were marked $77.00 but I went to the price scanner area and they rang up for $50.00. The best thing? The rebate is limit 3 per address. I bought 3 of them and will submit all for the rebate. I figure I'll take an Xacto knife to cut the UPC code off and it says you can send copies of the receipt and gives a web address to track your rebate.

It will list the weather in over 150 US cities. You can check the list - if your city isn't on there, one near you probably is! You can read more about the features of this forecaster on the Bushnell website.

Sunday, 7/26 Coupon Preview

You can find out what coupons will be in the Sunday paper on the Sunday Coupon Preview.

Remember that some coupons are regional so you may not see all of these in your newspaper, but you'll get most of them. I use this as a great gauge as to whether I need to ask my friends, family, and co-workers for their Sunday coupon inserts or not. Looks to be a very good week (especially with KMart doubles coming up again in a few weeks!)

All You Magazine - Last Call for Hot Deal!

My contact, Cheryl, at Southern Living at Home, has advised me that this month will be the last month to score the great subscription deal for All You Magazine. The price will be going up effective August 1, 2009 so you can only score this deal if you order AND pay for the subscription before July 31.

For those of you who aren't familiar with All You Magazine, it is a magazine only sold at WalMart that retails for $2.24 per issue and is FULL of awesome coupons! I've blogged about it many times - check here, here, and here. Cheryl offers a 2 year subscription of All You for just $17.95 for Nicole's Nickels' readers! This is an incredible deal - I love my All You Magazine!

To check out the coupons from this month's issue, check out the entire list in my coupons in August magazines post - it includes many high value coupons, buy 1 get 1 free's and even a freebie!

It's easy to take advantage of Cheryl's special 2 year for $17.95 subscription offer. Remember you only have until July 31, 2009 and after that the price will increase to $17.95 for just 1 year.

Here's how to order:

  • Sign on to the Southern Living at Home site (must use this link)
  • Click on "our products" on the left hand side
  • Click on "how to purchase"
  • Type in "Nicole" and click continue
  • Select "Nicole's Nickels"
  • In the search box type "40776" then click "go"
  • Click on "All You Personal Subscription" then select this item
  • Select "finalize" and submit your order and follow the screens to the checkout

Note: Do not select "direct ship" as this does not apply to magazines. There are no shipping costs associated with ordering this magazine. The price shows as $19.95 but Cheryl will adjust the price (she accepts a lower commission to help my readers out). Please pay with a credit or debit card and do not click "submit" more than once as it may process multiple times. You can find some frequently asked questions by clicking here. It will take 6-8 weeks to receive your first issue. If you have any issues with the checkout process or any questions about this deal, please email Cheryl at finallylarrys@yahoo.com

First thing you'll need to do is sign-up for Cashbaq. Cashbaq is a great cash-back site. Just shop through them when you make purchases online and you'll get a percentage of what you buy back! They'll send you a check a few weeks after you make the purchase. It's that easy!

Anyway, sign up for FREE for Cashbaq or log in if you already have an account.

In the top left where it says "shop by store" scroll down until you find "Entertainment Book" then click. Then click "use this coupon" where it says "all books, $7.99". It will take you to the entertainment book website but you'll get credit through Cashbaq!

The price of the book is $7.99 and you'll get $8 cash back through Cashbaq. Shipping and handling is $1.99 so if you're already a member of Cashbaq you'll pay just $1.98 total after your Cashbaq credit. If you're new to Cashbaq you'll get $5 for signing up which means that the book is FREE and you made $3.03 on the deal and got a 2009 Entertainment Book.

When you are checking out, make sure not to select the option that places you on auto-ship for the books for future years. It gives you the option - just select "no".

I have a 2009 Entertainment book and it is packed with awesome coupons and discounts - for everything from restaurants to amusement parks and clothing stores. It's worth it, for sure.

Milk Deals!

A few of my frugal friends have found some great deals on milk around the country this week!

Corrie at the "Cents"able Momma has information on how Michigan residents can score milk for just $.99 each after ECB's. See her post for more information.

For my fellow Florida readers, Angie at Thrifty Florida Mama shows you how to get TG Lee Milk for just $.79 after printable coupon and ECB's. Read more here.

Remember, you can freeze milk so stock up on this super cheap milk if you can!

Service with Style

I have been signed up with Service with Style for about 4 months now and am happy with their timely payments and variety of shops in my area. They have many restaurant and bar shops where I am and I have seen other kinds of shops listed in other areas.

They use the "prophet" system for entering reports and selecting shops which I am not a huge fan of but it is a solid system. I receive emails from them several times a month when shops are available in my area but you should add this site to your list of ones to check.

I received timely payment by check from them and the whole thing was very simple. I entered the shop, didn't have a back and forth with any editor, and got my check! I have done a few shops with them now and this seems to be the norm!

As always, it's FREE to sign up for these companies. You're under no obligation to do any shops whatsoever.

To learn more about mystery shopping, please read my Mystery Shopping 101 post. For a list of other mystery shopping companies I have discussed click here.

FREE E-books!

I have to admit that while I am intrigued by the Kindle and the entire e-book revolution, I'm not quite there yet. I love my local library - I scout the books I want online and place them on hold as soon as they are released. They call me when they are available, I swing by during my lunch break and pick them up and then return them to the drop-box when I am ready. I have it down to a science!

I know many of you are probably loving your Kindles and other methods to read e-books and maybe someday I'll be there!

Here are a few great FREE e-book resources for everyone!

FREE download of Heroic Measures by Jill Ciment. This is an Oprah pick and is available exclusively to oprah.com members (it's FREE to join) and only until 10:59 a.m. eastern on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 (tomorrow)

Barnes & Noble has launched its E-Reader that you can download for FREE onto your Iphone/Ipod Touch, Blackberry, or PC Mac. Along with the download comes 6 FREE e-books! They also have a section of ebooks under $5.

How to Leave a Comment

I have acquired many new readers in the past couple of weeks many of whom are now to reading blogs and the blogosphere. I am currently running several giveaways (the current ones are in the top right of my blog under the title "current giveaways") and there seems to be some confusion about how to enter my giveaways.

Emailing me is NOT an entry into a giveaway. I cannot track emails as entries and have been emailing people back advising of this. This happens especially with those of you who subscribe by email - many of you are just clicking "reply" and emailing me your entries.

It's easy to leave a comment. Here's how:

1. If you're reading from an email or a feed, you'll need to click on the title of the post where you want to leave a comment. If you're not reading from an email or a feed, please click on the title of the post where you want to leave a comment.

2. A new window will open and the post where you want to leave a comment will appear with no other posts.

3. At the bottom of the post in that new window, you will see "post a comment" (right above where it says "links to this post").

4. Click "post a comment".

5. A new smaller window will open with all of the comments in that post already.

6. Scroll to the bottom of that window and you will see a white box that says "leave your comment".

7. Type your comment in that box.

8. Select anonymous (make sure to leave your email address inside the comment then) or use your google or blogger id to log in if you have one.

9. Click "publish your comment" when you're done typing it in.

10. Wait for me to approve your comment. It won't show up right away so don't get alarm and enter another one. I post comments as I can throughout the day, and unless you posted something not family-friendly I'll approve it.

I hope this helps you all enter my great giveaways.

Remember, you need to leave a SEPARATE comment for each entry you are able to make. So on the cake giveaway, for example, you need to leave a comment saying which flavor you like. If you also sent an email to 5 friends, leave another comment saying you did that. Each comment counts as one entry.

If you have any questions, leave a comment on this post or send me an email!

Mr. Rebates Review & $100 Amazon E-Certificate Giveaway

As you know if you have followed Nicole's Nickels for some time, I am a huge fan of Mr. Rebates and have used this website many many times as I shop online. I was thrilled when Mr. Rebates himself contacted me to see if I was interested in posting a review of the site along with an awesome giveaway! Of course I said yes!

Mr. Rebates is a cash-back shopping website that offers over 1500 stores plus money-saving online coupons that you can stack with the every day cash-back savings. Some of the top name brand stores include favorites like Macy's, Sears, Travelocity and more. Every time I contemplate purchasing something online I check the cash back percentage offered by Mr. Rebates. I love getting money back on my purchases - who wouldn't?

It's completely FREE to sign up for Mr. Rebates and you'll get $5 in your account just for signing up. Since you only need $10 in your account to cash out, you're already halfway there! Just log in to Mr Rebates each time you shop and then the site will take you to the retail site you request. It will keep track of how much you spend, verify it with the merchant and then after 90 days show as available in your account. I think the 90 days is so money is not being given and then the item subsequently returned, which I completely understand.

A recent example of a purchase I made in the past month was at Drugstore.com where I can get 10% cash back on my purchase. That means basically saving 10% on your order without even using a coupon! Mr. Rebates also has the great feature of posting available coupon codes so that it is really one-stop shopping for your Internet shopping needs!

Mr. Rebates has graciously decided to give one (1) of my lucky readers a $100 E-Certificate to Amazon.com. To enter, you MUST go the Mr Rebates website and leave a comment telling me what store featured on Mr. Rebates you'd like to shop at!

This giveaway will be good until July 26 at 9:00 pm Eastern time and a winner will be announced soon thereafter. If the winner does not respond to my email within 48 hours then I will pick a new winner. Good luck!
